Isgro

On Friday before leaving for Maryland I suggested to Brett that we stop into Isgro, my favorite bakery in Philadelphia, to pick up some treats (for our moms, of course). I love going to Isgro because it is right by the Italian Market and because it is impossible not to go in once you’re nearby— the smell is too attractive. Even hours after Isgro closes the fresh baked smell is pervasive, luring you in from anywhere down Christian Street. One of my favorite things is the simple Italian cookies:

There are usually some of these out for sampling. I have to be honest though, I’ve tried almost everything that Isgro offers, at one point or another. I highly recommend a pound of mixed cookies and the sourcream apple walnut tart. Oh, and a few ricotta filled cannolis for the road. And the rum cake!

For dinner Friday night I picked up the fruit topped cheesecake. It was not only beautiful but also very delectable:

Saturday night for break fast everyone brought a dessert, so I just got a pound of cookies. My favorite cookies are the ones with sprinkles as well as the chocolate drizzled ricotta cookies.

If you are in Philly and you need to pick up a dessert this is the place to go!

A few shots from the panaderia (bakery) near Mattea’s apartment, on the corner of Avenida Santa Fe and Oro. We popped in here a couple times and I was left in amazement of the incredibly beautiful and huge supply of treats they had. Everything from fresh bread to cakes to sandwiches and even freshly made chocolate candies. And to top it off it was pretty and tasty, too.

Scenes from an Italian [Market Festival]

9th Street was crowded with people, crafts, food, and music for blocks and blocks.

Isgro’s stand. This is one of my favorite bakeries in the city, found at 10th and Christian. If it’s not busy and you ask a lot of questions about certain baked goods, sometimes they’ll let you try things for free!

They have the best Italian Rum Cake and amazing cannoli.

The original DiBruno Bros.

A slice of tomato pie from Iannelli’s. Such a Philly favorite.

Mmmmmm, waking up to a cuddle fest followed by fresh bagels and croissants from Metropolitan Bakery is the best. Oh, and it’s a beautiful day in Philadelphia to top things off. Happy Spring!

For those of you doing any last minute gift shopping I suggest you check out the Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook. It was recommended to me by my cousin Ann, who truly knows all about baking. The recipes look scrumptious and the website is adorable: http://hummingbirdbakery.com
