Spread Bagelry

So while I’ve been totally neglecting my blog lately (as well as cleaning my apartment and running as much as I’d like to) I’ve been busy busy studying for finals, writing final papers, and creating final presentations. Ah, the life of a graduate student. But, luckily, almost everything is done, except for one final at 4:30pm today (wish me luck!) and one next Thursday. Woo.

So what have I been eating? I can honestly say I haven’t had as much time/energy to cook the past few weeks. But I’ve had a couple delicious breakfasts at a relatively new joint in Rittenhouse, Spread Bagelry. Spread is “Montreal style” bagels, meaning they’re baked in a wood fire oven, like what you see in a pizza place. They are softer than your traditional bagel, but really yummy just the same. Bonus— the spread toppings are amazing!

A few weeks ago I went with the wonderful Catie, and enjoyed this whole wheat everything bagel with nova cream cheese and tomatoes. I love that they have whole wheat with toppings, rather than your typical plain old whole wheat bagel. Slip stopped by on his way out and also picked up a bagel sandwich…

He got the frittata scramble, which includes eggs, bacon, cheddar cheese, and Amish country jam. A weird combination to have blueberry jam on bacon? It was delightful.

The atmosphere of Spread is cozy. We stuck ourselves into a corner, with some newspapers, and were spectators as the long lines started to form, and a live bluegrass band set up to play right outside (live music every weekend!)

The logs were set up along a wall near the oven and across from the big pots of La Colombe coffee, my favorite brew. We also caught notice of the fact that on the weekends Spread offers BYO vodka for $8 all you can drink Bloody Mary’s.

Spread is a sweet little spot for morning breakfast and chit chat with a friend, or a nice place to stop in for a quick bagel and coffee on the go. Add in the fact that it’s situated perfectly on 20th between Locust and Spruce, with the most cozy environment, and great tunes playing inside (and outside), and I think we’ve got ourselves a winner!

Happy Brunch Day!

This morning we threw my mom an informal but delicious brunch get together. Brunch is probably my mom’s favorite meal, because she really loves bagels and smoked fish.

My dad made a perfectly seasonal onion, feta, and mint frittata. It was cooked so well in his wonderful frittata pan.

Ben and Jessie picked up some really yummy smoked fish, which included blue fish, salmon with heavily carmelized onions on top, and freshly thinly sliced gravlax. It went perfectly with the wildly fresh bagels that were still warm.

And I set the table and poured some coffee and juice and enjoyed this lovely brunch. Happy Mother’s Day to all of yours!
