It's that time of year again...
You might be thinking “spring”, but if you’re in graduate school like me then you know I mean “finals”. Ohhhh, finals. Sigh. Would rather be cooking…

Matzoh Toffee Crunch
Last night I made a huge amount of this easy to pull together, only 4 ingredients, kosher for Passover dessert (and snack). You can also make this with saltines and it is just as good. Feel free to use different variations— for one batch I used white chocolate and semisweet chocolate chips. You can top the chocolate with pecans (which I did), or almonds, or coconut. Go wild!

Capogiro
Even though it has gotten a little chilly this weekend, I finally made it over to Capogiro yesterday. It was awesome! There were so many flavors to choose from, and the “gelato artisans” let us sample so many of them before making up our minds. I chose the Rosewater— which was super creamy, sweet, and flowery— and Banana Chocolate gelato. Some of my favorites were the...

Garlic Soup
Because, sadly, it is cold outside, now is the opportune time to enjoy this delicious garlic soup we made a few weeks back. I adapted the recipe from the nytimes.com and it was probably literally the easiest thing I have ever made, and was way better than I expected. This is the kind of meal you can whip up any night of the week and be really happy with your choice.
1. Bring 4 cups of water to a...

Shakshooka
Although this recipe is adapted from Hilary’s Heavenly Eggs on the Noble Pig, I am going to call it what it tastes most like to me— Israeli Shakshooka, a great kind of tomato stew with some eggs and bread. This is such a delicious and simple dish to make, but I think can bring a nice variety to your normal dinners (or brunch, if you feel a need to keep eggs in the morning)....
Cafe Lift
A few weeks ago, on a rainy spring day, Slip and I lunched at Cafe Lift, which is on 13th between Spring Garden and Callowhill (what neighborhood is that anyway?) Although it is in a mildly random location, right between the creeping gentrifications of Northern Liberties and Fairmount on both sides, it is worth it if you’re in the neighborhood. It’s a small joint with a good menu and...

Free Ice Cream! I would be remiss not to post that today is “Free Cone Day” at Ben and Jerry’s. Click here for more information. Ben and Jerry’s has been serving up some delicious, mouthwatering flavors for years, and here is your annual chance to celebrate that. Plus, free ice cream is always a good idea…
Hey, Wine Not? →
Click above for my friend Eric’s blog “Hey, Wine Not?”, a college sommelier’s adventures in drinking and reviewing delicious and affordable wines. He gifted me with some wine pairings for the grape tomatoes stuffed with marinated feta I made for the “Things stuffed with other things” party. Enjoy. Cheers!

Oh how I’ve missed Jamie Oliver, the former Naked Chef. His new ABC show “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution” looks promising— check it out! Sign his petition to change how we feed children in America in public schools.

Brussel Sprouts and Bacon
Sunday night always brings simultaneous feelings of relaxation and nerves about going back to work. Last Sunday called for some simple comfort flavors and an appetizing dinner. After wandering the aisles at Whole Foods, we came home with some prepared crabcakes, brussel sprouts, and a package of bacon. What could be bad about that? The crabcakes, although seemingly easy, were kind of annoying....

Parc Restaurant
This weekend my parents came to Philadelphia to visit and celebrate both of their birthdays. We went to brunch at Parc, a Steven Starr restaurant located right on the east side of Rittehouse Park. It looks and feels like a quaint bustling French bistro, complete with small tables facing onto the park, open doors with a breeze blowing, French music, and topless pinup girls in the mens bathroom...

Corned Beef and Cabbage
Ok, I’ll admit it— the picture that I posted may not have been the most appealing to some. But that corned beef and cabbage was damn good.
If you haven’t tried this St. Patty’s Day favorite before, I highly recommend it. Already seasoned briskets are sold every year this time at Whole Foods (and other stores, I’m sure) which you can pick up with a cooking recipe and...

Right this moment, while I do schoolwork. What a great boyfriend! Happy St. Pattys Day to all.

Tria Happy Hour
Last week a moment of celebration arose as I was accepted to get an MPH dual degree and Julie got a wonderful field placement for next year. What is always a good idea for celebration? Happy Hour. Happy Hour is wonderful.
We went to the Rittenhouse location of Tria Wine Bar to celebrate. Tria is a special little place with a great variety of beer, wine, cheese, and snacks. They even have a...
It's Cool to be a "Regular"
Thursday night Slip and I went to dinner with some friends at our favorite nearby Chinese restaurant, Square on Square. We were trying to decide what family style dishes to share and Slip mentioned the Merlot Mongolian Beef (which was not listed on the menu), to which our waiter responded “Ohhhh, you’re regulars.” Then we found out it’s good to be a regular. Our service was...

One more from NYC...
So let me share one more bite with you from my brief stop in NYC last weekend. We went to brunch at Sarabeth’s on the Upper West Side to celebrate Naomi’s birthday. Sarabeth’s is most well known for the jams, which are sold throughout the city (and elsewhere, I believe), and the baked goods. I loved it! Minus the exceptionally overpriced orange juice, I can imagine this being a...

Roast Chicken Boxed Lunches
Remember these little boxed lunches I made up for Slip the other day?
Easy peasey. Roughly chop up a large onion and pile it in the bottom of a baking dish. Drizzle 1 tbsp olive oil over the onions and 1 tbsp olive oil over two chicken breasts, ensuring both sides of the chicken are rubbed with oil. Season both sides of each chicken breast with salt and pepper and garlic powder. Place 2 sprigs...

Magnolia Bakery, NYC
On my brief visit to NYC this past weekend I stopped in to Magnolia Bakery, famed cupcake location in Sex and the City shoots and one of the catalysts of the cupcake trend which has eveloped us all. I have to admit— I did not eat a cupcake. I tasted Karen’s red velvet, which I didn’t love. The frosting was buttercream instead of creamcheese frosting, which I think is a major...

Grey Dog Cafe
I was in NYC for a hot second for my best friend’s birthday, and the bites my friends take me out for never fail. Right before I caught my bus Karen took me to Grey Dog Cafe near Union Square. It is a cute little hip cafe where you order at the counter one of many delicious breakfasts or lunches. I saw someone eating scrambled eggs, toast, and fruit, and had to have it. The simplicity of a...
As I glide over the brick sidewalks of Rittenhouse on this breezy, sunny day, my footsteps sounding one after another beaneath me, I breath a gentle sigh of relief; spring is finally knocking on our door. Here’s to the season of balmy weather, of asparagus, cherries, and citrus; here’s to the season that softly whispers “summer” in our ear. And cheers to a summer of sangria...
