Dim Sum Sunday
Today seemed like the perfect day for dim sum. Sara and I made plans to get together, and I found out today she’d never had dim sum before. I’ve never gone before in Philadelphia, but finding ourselves in close proximity to Chinatown we headed to what was highly recommended to me, Joy Tsin Lau. With not too long of a wait, we sat excitedly at our table sipping on tea, eyeing up the...

Pizzeria Stella
A few weeks ago after a trip to the movies (see The Artist, it was wonderful!) we stopped by Pizzeria Stella for a quick dinner. I’ve heard Stella can get pretty busy, but stopping in kind of late worked perfectly, as it was relatively empty. We first got seated in the bar area, which is pretty dark and kind of musty, but the hostess moved us into the main section with a smile. Sitting in...

Meatless Monday: Brown Rice Casserole
Brown rice is a staple in my household— we have a rice maker and many weeks will just make a pot of rice at the beginning of the week and use it throughout. I love our rice maker because it is so easy to use— just throw in some rice, water, and seasonings (i.e. salt, pepper, cumin, garlic powder, sauteed onions, etc.) and plug it in. Then I can go about getting some other things done...
Flexitarianism
topic101:
One of the health trends we’re watching in 2012 is the rise in the Flexitarianism—an approach to eating that reduces intake of meat and poultry without going Vegetarian. Interested? Start with Meatless Mondays.

Chewy Ginger Cookies
I made these cookies 3 or 4 times in the span of a few weeks— going through an entire jar of molasses— so I had to share them. I am actually not a ginger cookie person, and honestly made them at first because they seemed like the easiest, quickest cookie recipe in the December issue of Bon Appetit. But then… they turned out to be awesome. With three types of ginger (fresh,...

Meatless Monday: Butternut Squash Lasagna
This meal might be a little labor intensive, but it is filling, hearty, comforting, and satisfying. Also, the recipe is adapted from Cooking Light, making it a healthier version of your typical lasagna. If you give it a try, I’m sure you won’t regret it!

Drinking lots of water...
Because in just a few hours I’ll be at altitude in Avon, CO enjoying a few days of mountains, sunshine, and skiing. Oh, and there’s some pretty good food out there, too. So excited…

Dreaming of...
I’m watching Top Chef right now and my mouth is watering as the cheftestants are cooking their own BBQ at The Salt Lick outside of Austin. I’m thinking of my own trip there last March. And seeing all this meat, I’m dreaming of the prime rib we had on Christmas day!
Slip’s cousin Michael used his Big Green Egg to smoke this huge piece of meat in Jack Daniel’s wood...

A Taste of DiBruno Bros.
Last month something magical took place. Slip discovered on uwishunu.com (Philadelphians— check this out!) that the original DiBruno Bros. store down on 9th Street offers private tastings after hours. It costs $100 for eight people, and $20 for each additional guest. And trust me, it is worth if. You will find yourself privy to the full antipasto bar, some of the world’s best cheeses...

Trimming the Tree with Julia
Earlier last month my friend Aaron causally invited a few of us over for dinner as we celebrated finishing a final exam, extending the invitation to help trim the tree. I assumed that “dinner” might include some chips and dip, something simple, and cookies. But I was very wrong— Aaron is a host whose dinner party abilities are unsurpassed by almost anyone I know.

Maryland Crab Dip
Time to revisit an old favorite dish. Every Christmas Eve (since 4 years ago) I go to the Slip’s house to celebrate the holiday. Slip’s mom is Italian and, lucky me, that means I get to partake in Italian Christmas Eve, otherwise known as the Feast of Seven Fishes! This year’s feast included the likes of calamari salad, DiBruno Bros. seafood salad antipasto, fried smelts, pasta...

Speaking of Gifts (again)...
We recently gave Slip’s Dad (otherwise known as Poppa Slip) a tagine for his birthday. A tagine is a type of North African clay dish that has a low flat bottom and a tall domed top. It can be heated on the stovetop or in the oven. We bought this beautiful number for Poppa Slip’s birthday from Williams Sonoma:
And post gifting, Poppa Slip gave us a gift by preparing a beautiful...

Speaking of Gifts...
My cousin recently gifted me the most beautiful, perfect pasta dishes:
These 3 dishes (we can invite one other person over to enjoy pasta with us!) are handcrafted in Italy about 15 years ago. I love them!

Spread Bagelry
So while I’ve been totally neglecting my blog lately (as well as cleaning my apartment and running as much as I’d like to) I’ve been busy busy studying for finals, writing final papers, and creating final presentations. Ah, the life of a graduate student. But, luckily, almost everything is done, except for one final at 4:30pm today (wish me luck!) and one next Thursday. Woo.
